Q:
What is orthodontics?
A:
Orthodontics is a specialty branch of dentistry that
specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental
and facial irregularities. The practice of orthodontics requires
professional skill in the design, application, and control of
corrective appliances to bring teeth, lips, and jaws into proper
alignment and to achieve facial balance.
Q:
Why is orthodontics important?
A:
An attractive smile and improved self-image are just a couple
of the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Without treatment,
orthodontic problems can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bone
destruction, chewing and digestive difficulties, speech impairments,
tooth loss, and dental injuries.
Q:
Isn’t orthodontic treatment expensive?
A:
Not in comparison to the cost of dealing with untreated
problems. Orthodontic treatment may bring long-term health benefits
and may contribute to the avoidance of costly, serious problems
later in life. Orthodontic fees vary, depending on the severity of
the problem, complexity of treatment, and length of treatment time.
Q: How long does
orthodontic treatment take?
A:
Treatment times vary on a case by case basis, but the average
time is one to three years. Treatment time can be affected by rate
of growth, cooperation of the patient, and the severity of the
correction necessary.
Q:
Will braces or other orthodontic appliances hurt?
A:
Most patients experience some discomfort the first week the
braces or other appliances are put on and immediately after they are
adjusted. Aspirin,
non-aspirin pain-reliever or ibuprofen can be used to treat
discomfort.
Q:
What can I eat with braces or other orthodontic appliances?
A:
Most foods can be enjoyed just like before you got your
braces on. Sticky,
chewy, and hard foods can damage appliances and should be avoided.
Carbonated beverages, like soda pop, are to be avoided as well.
Q:
Will I still be able to play sports or a musical instrument?
A:
Of course! With a little care, you can continue to have fun
playing in the band or in a sport. We do recommend that our patients
protect their teeth and appliances with a mouth guard for all
sports. We do have a supply of mouth guards here in our offices, or
in certain cases, a custom mouth guard can be made.
Q:
How often will I need office visits?
A:
Once appliances are in place, routine office visits are at
four-to-eight week intervals.
Q:
Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?
A:
Orthodontics, Inc. works together with your general dentist
to ensure your excellent dental health. It is very important for you
to continue to see your general dentist every 6 months for a
cleaning and dental check-up.
Q:
Will I see the same doctor at every visit?
A:
We encourage patients to meet all of our doctors. Treatment
plans are well documented and each doctor has the confidence in his
colleagues to provide outstanding care to each patient. However, if
you enjoy seeing the same doctor at every visit, please let us know
when scheduling your next appointment.
